The amateur football team ‘Societa Sportiva Sabrina Salerno’, founded in Seville, has decided to pay homage to the Italian 80’s icon Sabrina Salerno. The group of fans founded a 7-a-side team named after the actress and singer who became an international sensation, nowhere more so than in Spain, during the years of their youth.
“All of us are around 40-years-old, all of us enjoyed Sabrina when we were young and we wanted to honour her. Italian football and Sabrina were the stars of our youth when we were kids when we had just started to kick the ball,” said team’s goalkeeper Antonio on how they had come up with the team’s name.
The phenomenon has reached such a level of notoriety that the Givova brand, which made their team kits, has decided to start selling them to anyone who wants one online for €14.90 ($17.60).
“People around us think we are crazy, not only for coming to play a ‘pachang’ (informal football game), but for creating all this mess, and overall we enjoy the amount of new ‘tiffossi’ (supporters) of the Sabrina Salerno (team) that are supporting us, are buying our t-shirts, and are even thinking of creating an association of the Societa Sportiva Sabrina Salerno. So for us, this is perfect,” added Antonio.
